WPD preview - Wexford
Expect to see a new approach in how Wexford go about their business in the 2025 SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division season.
Former Raheny United and Bohemians manager Sean Byrne arrives with the right amount of experience and expertise required to give the club a lift that can thrust them back into the arena where the title heavyweights trade blows.
Byrne – who will be assisted by Pat Trehy – knows how to get the best out of players and he will look to lean on the experience of Kylie Murphy and Ciara Rossiter while also integrating some fresh faces into their line-up.
The big news from the off-season was that Aoibheann Clancy left for Shelbourne. The even bigger news, however, was that Ellen Molloy came back from a short stint with Sheffield United. If you don’t know it by now, watching the Thomastown Technician in full flow is worth the entry fee to Ferrycarrig Park every time they are at home.
Wexford have interesting options all over the pitch with Grace Fitzpatrick Ryan pushing to secure a starting spot in a backline that could boast Aoife Kelly, Lauren Dwyer and Della Doherty. They look particularly strong in this area, with Orlaith Conlon also a mainstay at left-back.
Three former players – Becky Cassin, Freya De Mange and Lauren Kelly – are back with the club, but goalkeeper Jayne Merren and striker Ceola Bergin have departed. Wexford fans need not fear though because Maria O’Sullivan has arrived from Watford and Leah McGrath has the potential to learn from club legend Rianna Jarrett to develop into a free-scoring forward in this League.
