Limerick FC’s winless run continues after they fell to a 3-0 defeat to league leaders Dundalk at the Markets Field.

The Shannonsiders are without a victory since beating bottom side Bray Wanderers on March 9 and their manager Tommy Barrett admitted after the Dundalk defeat that they can’t continue to concede cheap goals.

“Not stopping crosses for the first two and the third one as well was a calamity,” said a frustrated Barrett after the game. “You can’t give away chances like that.

“Giving the likes of Duffy too much time on the ball. You can’t give teams like Dundalk a goal like the first one. We said at the start to keep it tight, get tight to your man and we didn’t do that. It’s disappointing.

“They are a good side but I thought we had good passages of play in the second half. Conor Clifford was good, Eoin Wearen was decent when he came on but they were better than us.

“That’s where we are at. We have four lads under 20 on the pitch but we need more from out experienced lads as well. They have to show more leadership qualities.”

Despite the lack of wins, Barrett is still hopeful that his side can reverse their form but is also aware that they need to up their game.

“I’m not overly worried as we are still contending with a lot of injuries but we know where we are at. Everyone was slaughtering us at the start of the season saying we were going to be bottom with our squad. We had to rush to put it together.

“I still think we are better than what we are showing. We just have to stop conceding silly goals. When you are in a scrap and you need to be minimum work hard an keep a clean sheet but we really don’t look like scoring and that’s a worry for us.

“We need a goalscorer. Mark (O’Sullivan) has been unlucky with injury and the other lads we have, really, haven’t scored at this level. Danny Morrissey has got a couple of goals with 23 but Conor (Ellis) hasn’t scored and Mark is 35 as well. We know we are light in the position.”

Limerick’s next game is a trip to Shamrock Rovers on Friday night and given the Hoops’ current woes, it could be the perfect opportunity for the Shannonsiders to earn a much needed result.
