St. Patrick’s Athletic picked up a first Premier Division win since May 12 when they came from behind to beat Derry City at Richmond Park on Friday evening.
Picking up just their fourth win of the season, Saints boss Liam Buckley was evidently relieved to see his side pick up all three points against tough opposition.
“That was an important win for us,” he said after the game. “There have been a lot of games where we haven’t been bad, but we’ve picked up nothing.
“Tonight the lads worked hard for 90 minutes and I thought we probably deserved it.”
Saints’ wins have come scattered throughout their 22 games to date, and Buckley admits that it is hard to see the light when enduring a tough run.
“When you’re winning games it is difficult to see yourself losing but when you are losing it is even more difficult to see yourself winning,” Buckley added.
“It’s a bit of a confidence thing but we just need to maintain our focus going into next week with Bray, which is another difficult game, and see where we go from there.”
Buckley, as ever, was keen to look on the bright side, with the result taking Pat’s out of the bottom three, he joked that his players were aiming higher than avoiding relegation.
“Somebody in the dressing room said that we are only 13 points off Europe,” he said, laughing.
“But on a serious note, we are not thinking any further than Bray. I actually had to ask them tonight who we were playing next week but the following week does not matter for now.”
The win takes St Pat’s out of the bottom three, now sitting in ninth place on 20 points.
