Shane Tracy was amongst the goals as Limerick swept Athlone Town aside for their third win on the bounce in the SSE Airtricity League First Division.

The win thanks to Tracy’s goal and another Connor Ellis strike puts Tommy Barrett’s men up to second in the table after six games and the veteran left back is more than happy with how the game went against Athlone.

“I’m delighted. It’s great to get the three points again. Obviously, at the start of the season there was a bit of the unknown with a couple of kids coming through.

“But it’s been great in the last few weeks and we’re delighted to keep pushing on. Connor has been brilliant in fairness, especially in the last couple of games.

“He works hard in training and looks after himself well. To be fair, all the boys have been brilliant. We had a couple of chances tonight leading into his goal.

“It’s similar at the back. We have a lot of experience, but Jack Brady and Killian Brouder have been excellent too. As an all round team, organisation wise, I think we are very good."

The win over Athlone followed on from others against Cabinteely and Cobh in recent weeks. Limerick travel to bottom placed Galway next week and will be full of confidence going to Eamon Deacy Park.

Tracy expects the positive vibe currently surrounding the club to be brought into that game against a Galway side that have struggled so far this season.

“There is a great buzz around the squad. They are a great bunch of lads in the dressing room and it’s the best dressing room that we have had in a number of years.

“Young boys bring a lot to the table. The older lads are just there to help out this time around . When you’re winning games it makes everything that bit easier.

“The First Division is a great platform for the younger boys. The encouragement is there for them to go out and play each week.”

Limerick’s solid start to the season has been built around their home form – a stark contrast to the 2018 season.

Tracy believes that the close nature of the squad has helped make the Markets Field a fortress thus far in 2019.

“It’s an all round thing. Everyone’s just got behind it this year. Everyone is fit and looking after themselves really well.

“Some of the additions have been very good. It’s just been very positive so far. All we have to do is keep building on that.”
