Sligo Rovers host Men's Mental Health Day

Sligo Rovers held a well-attended Men's Health Day at the Showgrounds on Wednesday with information from contributors on physical and mental health as well as health checks for all those in attendance.

The event was organised as part of Men's Health Week which takes place on a nationwide basis during the month of June.

The theme this year is 'Know Your Numbers'. The key message to everyone is that ‘men’s health counts.’

The week is a population-wide attempt to increase awareness of the key numbers that policy makers, service providers, men and important people in men’s lives need to know.

Sometimes, these relate to medical issues (e.g. blood pressure), but they also need to include key statistics on the state of men’s health (or ill health) in Ireland, as well as the contact numbers for helpline and support services that can maintain men’s health.

Following the presentations and health checks at the Showgrounds those in attendance then went to the astro pitch for some football.

Sligo Rovers Football Social Responsibility (FSR) officer Jamie Murphy said: "We were absolutely delighted with the numbers of people who turned up on the day and got health checks. The promotion of positive and physical and mental is hugely important for the club. We would encourage anyone that is concerned about a health issue to make an appointment with their GP and get it checked out. It doesn't matter how big or small the issue might seem, your GP is the best person to start with and they will offer you advice guidance. We want to say a huge thanks to Greg, Paula and Greg for all their help on the day with information and health checks and Rovers captain Niall Morahan for supporting the event."
