Shamrock Rovers goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu has been named SSE Airtricity/Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland Player of the Month for July.

At just 16, the Shamrock Rovers goalkeeper built on his excellent performances in June with a penalty save against the champions Cork City to help earn a 0-0 at Turner’s Cross.

The teenage sensation also excelled for the Hoops in two Europa League games with AIK.

"I am delighted to be awarded SSE Airtricity League Player of the Month for July by the Soccer Writers,” Bazunu said.

“There were lots of great players in contention, including my team-mate Dylan Watts, so to be voted number one is brilliant.

“I have been in with the first-team squad all season but had no idea that the opportunity to play would come along so soon for me. I have been working hard and with some injuries I was brought into the matchday squad, then head next the gaffer told me I was starting in the team against Bray in June.

“Things went really well since then and I played three more league games before we had the Europa League qualifiers and that was another great experience for me.

“I am grateful to everyone who has helped me and to everyone who continues to help me at the club - my team-mates, all the staff, the fans and my family and friends. Rovers is everything to me and I just want to keep working hard, do my Leaving Certificate next year and be the best footballer that I can be."

In winning the award, Bazunu saw off Dundalk pair Chris Shields and Michael Duffy, who finished second and third respectively.
