The bottom two sides in the division had to be content with a point apiece after an even tussle in Ferrycarrig Park.

The hosts got off to a good start with Thomas Croke ghosting into the box to get on the end of a long throw-in from Craig McCabe and heading it beyond Igor Labuts on eight minutes.

However, their joy was short-lived as Ryan Gaffney nodded the ball into the net just three minutes later, after Walter Inverizzi headed the ball into his path.

In the 39th minute Athlone were in front, with Cormac Raffery getting on the end of Conor Barry free-kick and steering it past stranded Wexford goalkeeper Corey Chambers.

The Slaneysiders went agonisingly close to equalising just before the break when Mark Slater's well-struck free-kick hit the crossbar, and Liam Donnelly's follow-up effort was off target.

Wexford made a lightning start to the second-half, with Mark Slater arrowing the ball to the corner of the net after just 48 seconds, but try as they might neither side could find a winner thereafter.
