Wexford FC and Galway United had to be content with a point apiece after a pretty uninspiring SSE Airtricity First Division basement battle in Ferrycarrig Park. Debutant Shane Griffin was lively for the hosts, twice forcing good saves out of Kevin H

Galway United manager Shane Keegan endured a frustrating return to Ferrycarrig Park as the westerners' promotion hopes were dented as they were held to a scoreless draw by Wexford FC.

The visitors bossed the game in terms of possession but lacked a cutting edge in the final third and chances were few and far between. The only effort of note in the first 45 minutes came from Stephen Kenny just before the half hour mark, but his long-range effort was tipped around the post by Wexford goalkeeper Corey Chambers.

The westerners continued to press after the interval without offering too much of a threat, although in the 65th minute Eoin McCormack got his head to a Gary Shanahan cross but his effort drifted across the face of goal and wide of the left upright.

Four minutes later they had a sniff of a chance again when the ball fell to the feet of Conor Barry, but he blazed his first-time effort over the bar. Wexford FC grew into the game as the second-half wore on and looked to hit their opponents on the break and they gave a glimmer of hope to the home faithful that the could snatch an unlikely winner, but the hard-working front man Danny Doyle twice made his run a fraction too early when put in the clear.

Galway forced three successive corners with five minutes remaining and Chambers had to palm Stephen Kenny's second flag-kick over the bar.

The hosts threatened to grab a winner in the 89th minute when Dean Kelly got on the end of Liam McCartin's cross but his shot was blocked and Dean George dragged his follow-up effort wide.

At the other end Eoin McCormack and Ryan Connolly tried their luck but both saw their efforts fizz off target and they had to settle for a point.
