Waterford FC advanced to the EA Sports Cup Second Round after a 4-1 win at home to UCC on Monday night.
The win sets up an intriguing Munster Derby against Cork City next Monday at the RSC. Waterford FC took the lead after just 11 minutes.
Derek Daly found the run of Sander Puri inside the penalty area and his drive towards the back post found John Martin to fire home from close range. UCC had a spell of possession and successive corners but they failed to really trouble Waterford, before keeper David Coffey pulled off a great save to deny Waterford’s Sander Puri.
The UCC defence was breached again though just after the half hour. A quick one-two between Sander Puri and Dean Walsh set up Estonian international Puri to fire beyond Coffey. Waterford’s dominance was showing and they made it 3-0 before half time.
Dean Walsh found the run of Martin down the left and he picked out Derek Daly in the penalty area. Although the pass was behind the midfielder, he composed himself before firing left-footed past UCC keeper Coffey.
Coffey then pulled off a great save from Daly before UCC pulled a goal back. The ball dropped to Ronan Hennessy inside the penalty area and his strike went under the body of Waterford keeper Corbet; the keeper won't have been happy with the concession.
But the comeback was short lived as 11 minutes later Waterford make it 4-1. John Kavanagh sent in a curling cross from the right and Ismahil Akinade headed brilliantly over the stranded UCC keeper Coffey.
Matthew McKevitt and Garan Manley both had opportunities as UCC continued to look to play but neither could find a way to the back of the net as Waterford advanced to round two.
