Cork City moved back to the top of the table after a 2-1 win against Waterford FC at the RSC on Friday night with goals from Garry Buckley and Graham Cummins.
Waterford who had the first chance as Gavan Holohan was fouled but referee Neil Doyle played an excellent advantage for Ismahil Akinade to race down the righ but Cork City keeper Mark McNulty made the low save.
At the other end, Rory Feely’s backpass to keeper Matthew Connor was short and Karl Sheppard picked up the ball. Connor recovered his position and saved well from Sheppard’s strike across the goal.
The home side created a better chance after 18 minutes. Stanley Aborah's switched play to the left to Dylan Barnet and he crossed first time for Holohan. The midfielder’s run was timed well but again McNulty was in the right place to make a good save.
Waterford grabbed the opener after 31 minutes. Noel Hunt picked up possession on the endline after Rory Feely’s perfect ball over the top. Hunt ran at and beat Sean McLoughlin before beating McNulty at the near post.
But Cork City were level within 60 seconds. Steven Beattie played the ball to Graham Cummins who controlled brilliantly inside the penalty area before laying the ball off to Garry Buckley. The midfielder skipped passed the challenge of Paul Keegan before firing low beyond Connor. John Caulfield’s side turned the game on its head and took the lead eight minutes into the second half.
Garry Buckley’s strike from long range forced Waterford keeper Connor into a good save but Cummins was quickest to react and to fire the ball over the helpless Connor. Dylan Barnett forced McNulty into a save as Waterford looked for a leveller, while Graham Cummins had the ball in the net at the other end but was ruled to be offside as he finished.
But as much as Waterford looked for a leveller, Cork withstood the pressure and secure the three points to move them back to the top of the table.
