Waterford FC made a return to winning ways after a hard-fought 1-0 win at home to UCD at the RSC.
Zack Elbouzedi’s first-half was enough for Waterford FC to see off the challenge of UCD 1-0 in the RSC on Friday night. UCD started brightly and Neil Farrugia saw his strike go straight at Waterford FC keeper Matthew Connor.
Bastien Hery had Waterford’s first chance on 28 minutes but UCD defender Josh Collins made the block. Waterford FC took the lead after 36 minutes. Rory Feely played the ball inside to Cory Galvin who’s strike was blocked.
The ball dropped to Zack Elbouzedi who calmly fired into the bottom corner. JJ Lunney went close to doubling the lead in first-half stoppage time but his right-footed strike was just over the crossbar.
It was Waterford that almost doubled their lead as Drinan found the run of Elbouzedi but his curling effort wasbrilliantly kept out by Kearns. Liam Scales then got on the end of an overhit corner to find to Farrugia inside the penalty area but he couldn’t beat Connor.
UCD had an even better chance with 13 minutes left;. Richie O’Farrell doing well to keep the ball alive on the endline before finding Conor Davis but the striker could only shoot straight at keeper Matthew Connor.
Waterford could have sealed the points in stoppage time as Akinade forcing Kearns into a good save, before he then almost set Hery up but again Kearns was on hand to keep it out. UCD looked to force a late equaliser but it wasn’t to be as Waterford FC held on for the three points.
