Finn Harps took a massive step in their bid to stay in the Premier Division after a 1-0 win away to Waterford FC.
Mikey Place’s penalty 10 minutes from tie separated the sides as Alan Reynolds’ side fell to their fourth defeat in five game.. The home side started brightly and almost took the lead after seven minutes.
Shane Duggan’s corner kick was met by the head of defender Maxim Kouogun but his header struck the crossbar. JJ Lunney and Michael O’Connor did well on the quarter hour in the build up but Shane Duggan’s right-footed strike was just wide of the post.
Finn Harps began to get more into the game and had a good chance 13 minutes before half time. Harry Ascroft made space for the cross but Sam Todd’s header was just off target.
The visitors should have taken the lead on the stroke of half time. Raffaele Cretaro’s corner kick fell to Daniel O’Reilly but keeper Matthew Connor produced a great save to keep it scoreless at half time.
Shane Duggan forced keeper McGinley into a good save at the start of the second half before Cory Galvin’s curling effort was just wide minutes later. Raffaele Cretaro rifled a strike past Matthew Connor’s far post before Daniel O’Reilly had another great chance to score.
Mark Russell’s free kick found the defender but his header was narrowly wide of the near post. Daniel O’Reilly headed was just wide of the near post before Mikey Place forced Connor into a smart low save.
But Harps made their chances count when they scored with 10 minutes left. Georgie Poynton fouled Mikey Place and the striker stepped up to make it 1-0.
Kenny Browne almost levelled with minutes later when he got on the end of Karolis Chvedukas’ header but keeper McGinley made a great one-handed save to earn his side the points.
