A goal on his SSE Airtricity League Premier Division debutant from Cian Bargary was enough to see Cork City emerge from Belfield with a 1-0 win on Monday night.

The only goal of the game arrived in the 73rd minute to give City their third win since John Cotter arrived at the start of the month. Cork made a bright start, and Conor Kearns was called into action on three occasions inside the opening ten minutes.

The College keeper turned away James Tilley’s shot from outside the box, before pushing Garry Buckley’s header away. He then got down low to save from Karl Sheppard. UCD gradually grew into the game.

Conor Davis forced Mark McNulty into a save in the 26th minute, after being put through by Paul Doyle. The Cork keeper nearly gifted the hosts the lead shortly afterwards, as he slipped when trying to turn in his own box.

He recovered well though to push Sean McDonald’s shot away. The College striker had the best chance of the opening half with ninety seconds to go. He got on the end of a cross, but his header from ten yards went wide of McNulty’s right post.

Kearns showed his value again after the break, first saving from Sheppard’s flick, and then holding Kevin O’Connor’s header. The game was open, and UCD were the next to go close, this time from a corner.

O’Neill’s ball into the six yard box bounced around, but no player in Blue could poke the ball home, before Cork cleared. The visitors finally broke the deadlock with just under 20 minutes left.

Sheppard’s initial looping header saw Kearns scramble to keep the ball out, with the help of the crossbar. But Cian Bargary, who had won the initial corner, was there to force the ball home from two yards out. It was a goal six minutes into his league debut.
