A four-goal flurry in the first half proved enough for UCD to see off a sub-par Shelbourne with a 4-0 win at Belfield.

The Students started on the back foot, but raced into an emphatic lead early on as Gary O’Neill opened the scoring on seven minutes.

Liam Scales and Georgie Kelly got themselves on the scoresheet, before O’Neill stepped up with a cool head to convert a penalty that put UCD four goals to the good on the half-hour mark. Owen Heary was given further cause for concern as James English was stretchered off after the break.

The remainder of the second half proved uneventful in comparison to the opening 45 minutes, as UCD took the pace out of the game, allowing Shelbourne to grow into the action.

Any hopes the visitors had were soon extinguished when Jack Tuite saw red with still 30 minutes to play.
