St. Patrick's Athletic earned a hard-fought three points against Derry City at Richmond Park on Tuesday night. Saints had the better of the first half and broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute when Kevin Toner headed home Mikey Drennan's corner. It was a half where both defences held firm and attackers were forced to try their luck from distance. Drennan's effort for Pat's went over as did Conor McDermott's for Derry minutes later. The second half followed a similar pattern to the first as both attacks were largely kept at bay. On the hour, Rhys McCabe came close to his first Saints goal with a long-range effort but it went wide of the goal. Derry came close to an equaliser on 69 minutes when Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe's shot came back off the post. Seven minutes later, it was the turn of Derry's Gerardo Bruna to shoot from distance but his effort went wide. McCabe went close for Pat's again on 79 minutes, this time with a header from a Simon Madden cross. He rose well but missed the target. In a tense finish, Junior came close for Derry again but his shot was saved by Clarke. A minute later he headed wide from about eight yards out. In the end, it was a deserved three points for Harry Kenny's men who close the gap to Derry in fourth place to just one point. Next up a tricky trip to league leaders Dundalk on Friday, the same night Derry host Finn Harps.
