Sligo Rovers were defeated 2-1 by Cork City on Monday night at The Showgrounds.
The home side were under pressure early on. Cork City were close to taking the lead but the score was kept level as Michael Schlingermann made two excellent saves from close range in quick succession.
Efforts by Jimmy Keohane and Karl Sheppard were both well stopped by the Sligo goalkeeper within the opening minutes. Sligo kept Cork under control after the early scare, and were awarded a penalty after 23 minutes after Alan Bennett fouled Liam Martin as he ran through towards goal.
Sadlier calmly dispatched the penalty to make it 1-0 to the home side. Sligo continued to impress, and almost doubled their lead minutes after, as Raffaele Cretaro broke down the right, and delivered an excellent cross to Jonah Ayunga, who forced an excellent save from Mark McNulty in the Cork goal.
Sligo continued to work hard for the cause, with Cork not getting many clear opportunities to level the game, and it was advantage to the home side at half time. Cork were in control of the game from the off.
Cork were rewarded for their attacking intent when they were given a penalty on 54 minutes after Kyle Callan-McFadden who fouled Karl Shepard in the box. However, Maguire dragged his shot wide of the left post, and it remained 1-0 to the home side.
Cork were undeterred by this setback, and substitute Achille Campion equalised for the away side, tapping in an excellent cross from John Dunleavy after 64 minutes. Cork took the lead after 81 minutes in bizarre fashion, as Kevin O’Connor scored direct from a corner, his delivery deceiving all in the box and curling into the net.
Cork got the 3 points and keep their unbeaten record intact. Sligo performed admirably for much of the game, but Cork’s quality shone through to extend their unbeaten run to 15 games.
