New Waterford boss John Sheridan tasted victory in his first game in charge of The Blues as they beat Shelbourne 1-0 at Tolka Park on Saturday afternoon.

John Martin’s match winner on 15 minutes settled the contest for the away side in a closely fought affair in Drumcondra.

The victory sees Waterford leapfrog St. Patrick’s Athletic into 4th place in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division with Shelbourne dropping a place into 6th.

Waterford took the lead on the quarter-hour mark when new signing Oluwatunmise Sobowale headed a Tyreke Wilson delivery back across the face of goal. Matthew Smith couldn’t connect and in the scramble the ball fell on a plate one-yard out for Martin to tap home.

Shelbourne had a big chance on 55 minutes to level up. Aaron Dobbs wriggled into the Waterford area and squared to Karl Sheppard but he was denied by an excellent block by Robert McCourt.

Ian Morris’ team grew into the game in the second half but failed to create any clear cut chances and The Blues held on for a big win.
