A rampant Shamrock Rovers romped to a convincing 5-0 win over hapless Limerick on a fine dry evening at the Tallaght Stadium.
Ronan Finn, Greg Bolger, Dylan Watts and Roberto Lopes helped themselves to first half strikes as the Hoops maintained their strengthening grip on third place. Skipper Ronan Finn opened the scoring after just two minutes.
A corner fell perfectly to Finn outside the Limerick box and his powerful shot just flew into the net. Rovers other experienced midfielder Greg Bolger got in on the act ten minutes later.
Dylan Watts rolled a right wing corner into the path of the Wexford man whose first time low shot from the edge of the area screamed into the net. Rovers were full value for the third goal, which arrived in the 19th minute, even if there was an element of good fortune about Dylan Watts’ deflected shot which looped up and over Limerick keeper Jack Brady and into the net.
Roberto Lopes put the seal on a superb Rovers opening half showing when he neatly glanced home a near post header on the stroke of half-time. Finn’s second of the night arrived on the hour mark.
Brilliant combination play between Brandon Miele and Watts ended with the ex-Leicester player flashing in a cross. Miele’s header was parried by Brady into the path of Finn who rammed the ball in.
Finn, who had also hit an upright with a second half shot, was promptly substituted as Rovers prepare for tougher challenges ahead. Home Head Coach Stephen Bradley will be satisfied with both performance and result as Rovers recorded one of their biggest wins of the campaign.
