A brace of goals in six second half minutes wrapped-up the points for Shamrock Rovers against Limerick at the Tallaght Stadium as the Hoops cemented third place in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division.

Seven minutes after half-time, Limerick captain Shane Duggan was whistled for a foul in the box following a Rovers corner. Brandon Miele stepped-up to expertly convert the spot kick, low to the keeper’s right.

The Ronan Finn linked with Cameron King before racing clear of the Limerick defence to drive the ball under the dive of Freddy Hall to put Rovers 2-0 up. The Hoops were in complete control for much of the second-half but Stephen Bradley’s men were left hanging on a the end as sub Colm Walsh-O’Loughlin grabbed an 81st minute consolation for Limerick.

Dean Carpenter miskicked and Walsh-O’Loughlin smashed the ball high into the net. Rovers dominated the opening exchanges of the scoreless first half but a well-drilled Limerick eleven carved out some chances as the half went on. The best of these fell to Henry Cameron in the 21st minute.

Some defensive hesitancy in the Rovers box gave Cameron his opening but Kevin Horgan reacted well to turn the New Zealander’s effort around the post. As half-time approached, David McAllister almost gave Rovers the lead with a fierce drive from well outside the area. Limerick custodian Freddy Hall produced a fine save to tip the ball over the bar.
