Monday night football at the Tallaght Stadium and Shamrock Rovers’ title aspirations are back on track after a relatively routine 1-0 victory over St. Patrick’s Athletic, courtesy of a slick first half strike by Man of the match Ronan Finn. After a pretty even opening quarter, Rovers took a deserved lead in the 34th minute. Joey O’Brien, who got on plenty of ball at right back, lifted the ball forward from midfield. Finn and Kavanagh exchanged some neat passes before the young midfielder played in his skipper who slid a low shot into the net, completely wrong footing Brendan Clarke. Pat’s did have some half chances with Rhys McCabe and Simon Madden probing and Gary Shaw and Mikey Drennan trying to capitalize. One of the Inchicore men’s best opportunities all night fell to their captain Ian Bermingham whose 64th minute header was fielded well by Alan Mannus under his crossbar Aaron Greene might have made it 2-0 for the Hoops when he diverted a Jack Byrne corner goalwards in the 75th minute only to see his effort rebound into play off an upright. Substitute Dan Carr could have scored as well, spurning a number of openings, but Stephen Bradley must have been relieved that Mannus was at his vigilant best late on to bring off a marvellous save to keep out a piledriver from Dean Clarke. The majority in the near 4,000 attendance went home happy as Rovers brought their recent blip to an end.
