Well, they had to do it the hard way, the very hard way but Dundalk have a Baku date in two weeks following a sudden death penalty win over Riga FC in Latvia.
The Lilywhites will see this game that was a sheer test of resolve but for them to progress in the Latvian capital means the hardest test of the European adventure is now over.
Progression was a necessity, everything now is a bonus. Patrick McEleney was the danger man throughout the game and had two excellent chances to put the Lilywhites in the lead only for the keeper to pull off a magnificent save.
Riga was dangerous on the break consistently with Delbeklo proving on the turn he could cause a serious threat. However, the goals evaded both sides and despite having a numerical advantage in extra time they couldn't capitalise on it.
Spurred on by a magnificent travelling crowd Dundalk took to the penalty spot and Gary Rogers pulled off two magnificent saves in the shoot out to be the hero.
However, Sean Hoare took the decisive penalty to slot it home and to send Dundalk through. This was important for all involved in Dundalk especially Vinny Perth. The dreams are Europe will rest soundly in the minds of Dundalk fans for now.
Baku is next up.
