Longford secured all three points in a massive win over Drogheda United at the City Calling Stadium tonight thanks to another late goal, this time coming from Sam Verdon.

Longford controlled the majority of the first half with attacks from Anto Breslin, Jack Doherty and Dylan Grimes but it was Drogheda who opened the scoring on 33 minutes when Stephen Meaney pounced on a loose ball to put the visitors 1-0 up.

The lead didn't last long with new signing Dylan Grimes sylishly backheeling it into the net for the equalizer on 39 minutes.

The second half was fairly even with both teams having their share of opportunities but it was substitute Sam Verdon who opped up with 5 minutes remaining to score a powerful header into the top corner from a Breslin cross.

Drogheda bombarded the Longford goal in the 6 minutes of injury time but the home side held out.
