Limerick FC moved into second place in the SSE Airtricity League First Division with a 2-0 win over Athlone Town at the Markets Field.

A goal in each half from Shane Tracy and Connor Ellis helped Tommy Barrett's men to their third win on the trot. Tracy put Limerick ahead just after the half hour with a free kick from the right wing that evaded everyone and landed in the Athlone net.

That was the score at the break, but Limerick should have doubled their lead through Killian Brouder early in the second half, but he somehow missed from close range. Athlone had one great chance to level the game through Ciaran Grogan, but he also missed from four yards out after an excellent Kaleem Simon free kick.

Limerick should have went two up when Kieran Hanlon was played through on goal by Sean McSweeney, however, Aaron Myles made a fine stop. The home side were eventually rewarded for their dominance late on when Ellis slotted past Myles to make sure of the three points.
