Waterford FC progressed to the next round of the Extra.ie FAI Cup after a 2-0 win in Maginn Park against Glengad United.

Waterford dominated the opening stages but a stubborn Glengad side held them, going in level at the break.

Two goals late in the second half via Michael O'Connor and Cory Galvin ended the dream for the Junior side as they prepare for their League to commence.

Prior to kick off, there was one visible Waterford FC banner as many supporters made the longest of journeys to watch their team.

The Blues started heavily on the front foot and put the hosts under intense pressure during the opening stages but the team donning the black and yellow stood firm.

Cory Galvin was the first to truly test Kevin McLaughlin in goals, with a close range blast, the bounce favoured Galvin but his rebound shot struck the side netting.

Michael O'Connor was next to test his luck in close proximity as Glengad weathered a heavy storm.

Stephen McLaughlin and Terence Doherty combined well to create Glengad's first opportunity around the 20 minute mark, but the end result saw the latter fire high and wide.

The half hour mark witnessed the best chance of the half, and it fell the way of the visitors. Livewire Cory Galvin found space in the area and unleashed a strike at McLaughlin's goal, it took a slight deflection off Seamus Doherty before rebouding off the post, allowing McLaughlin to gather.

Waterford continued to press and struck the woodwork again moments later, via a long range drive from Sam Bone which McLaughlin tipped on the bar.

Galvin and O'Connor had half chances as the first half neared its end, both from close range as Glengad entered the dressing room at half time, the happier of the two teams.

The second half started similarly to the first, with Waterford knocking on the Glengad door but the hosts refused to answer.

O'Connor went close with a header around the hour mark, meeting a Poynton corner from the right.

Glengad were giving a good account of themselves against a Premier Division side but conceded a sloppy goal in the 70th minute.

Shane Duggan struck a free kick on the edge of the area, it struck John G McLaughlin and went high in the sky, falling on the head of Seamus Doherty who fluffed the ball into the path of O'Connor, his strike in the area was not clean but luck was on his side as it trickled into the corner.

Glengad replied with a decent chance, Stephen McLaughlin and Terence Doherty again combining well, but the shot by Doherty was tame, allowing Matthew Connor to gather.

A 1-0 defeat looked on the cards for the hosts but a late sloppy pass in midfield by Stephen McLaughlin allowed Alan Reynolds side some breathing space.

The pass was intercepted by Georgie Poynton who played through Cory Galvin, he ran at goal before a low shot got the better of McLaughlin in nets.

Glengad had a late opportunity cleared off the line as the Inishowen League side looked for a sweet note to end the game but Matthew Connor left with his clean sheet intact.
