Galway United have given their Premier Division survival hopes a massive boost with a confidence-boosting 3-1 victory against Sligo Rovers at Eamonn Deacy Park.

Shane Keegan's troops came from a goal down after Kyle Callan-McFadden had given the visitors the lead in the 15th minute - netting with his second attempt after the hosts had failed to clear their lines.

The Corribsiders, though, would equalise just before the referee blew the first-half whistle when Marc Ludden swept the ball home inside the crowded area in the 43rd minute to give them hope.

That spurred them on, and they started the second half as they ended the first - on top and with a bang. The real turning point, though, arrived in the 72nd minute when Kevin Devaney scored arguably the best goal of the season after he cut in from the left wing before curling a delectable shot from 30 yards over Shaun Patton and into the back of the net.

Three minutes later and Galway had doubled their lead through Gavan Holohan when he slotted home Devaney's assist from the right-hand side. In the end, Keegan's troops held on for a win that lifts them out of the relegation zone while Gerard Lyttle's troops are in ninth, one point adrift of their Connacht neighbours.
