Galway have taken a giant leap towards survival with a big three points at Eamon Deacy Park. The home side were deserving winners on a poor night for Kenny Shiels side.
Devaney put the home side ahead with a cool finish from 10 yards out after only 13 minutes.
Galway were unlucky not to add to their lead on a number of occasions but it was Patterson who was to strike next. His equaliser came just after the half hour mark and Derry started to grow into the game, but without any other chances.
Galway started the second half brightly but couldn't show for it other than missed chances. But then Stephen Folan popped up with the winner with ten minutes to go as he spun on the ball in the six yard area. Big three points for Galway, however they could prove costly in Derry pursuit of Europe.
