Daniel Kelly's strike was enough to snatch the points in Oriel Park tonight but the bigger story tonight is that Dundalk can close in further on that record league points tally of eighty-seven as Vinny Perth wants to add more gloss to this already impressive season.

Derry gave Dundalk a guard on honour before this evenings match and Declan Devine didn't change his tactic of continuing to go toe to toe with the league champions as he still harbours European aspirations.

Derry gave as good as they got in the first half which flattered to deceive at times, the mood was somewhat flat at Oriel which didn't help matters on the pitch.

It needed a spark but neither Barry McNamee nor his city-mate Michael Duffy could break the deadlock. Robbie Benson then decided to take the game by the scruff of the neck and bore down on the Derry defence early in the second half and his shot just went wide of the post.

Both sides decided to trade knock out blows before Dundalk finally delivered one thanks to the imports from Dublin's Ringsend. Sean Gannon spotting his neighbour Daniel Kelly at the back post and he applied a great finish from his cross to open the scoring.

Despite best intentions from both sides neither Derry nor Dundalk could muster a second goal in the game. Another one ticked off the list for Vinny Perth as he eyes up an Aviva date, a lot of football, however, has to be played before then.
