Luke McNally’s stoppage time header sealed a dramatic victory for Drogheda United as they defeated Bray Wanderers 1-0 at United Park.
Drogheda came close to the opener after only six minutes when Luke Heeney picked up the ball from deep before finding Chris Lyons who saw his rising effort tipped over the bar by Gabriel Sava.
Bray were threatening going forward and a quick throw in released Joe Doyle but his effort was smothered by the advanced Luca Gratzer.
The respective goalkeepers were the key players in the opening half with Sava producing two saves in quick succession to first deny Stephen Meaney and then James Clarke’s follow-up.
It was the visitors who ended the first-half the stronger as Dylan McGlade twisted and turned beyond three Drogheda defenders before somehow pulling his shot wide from six yards out.
Drogheda squandered a glorious opening early into the second-half as Chris Lyons cushioned Luke Gallagher’s pass into the path of James Clarke who fired over with the goal at his mercy.
The Seagulls were wasteful in front of goal once again as McGlade’s finishing let him down as he stabbed the ball wide with only Gratzer to beat.
There was to be one final twist in the tale as Sean Brennan’s long ball into the box was met by McNally who headed beyond the stranded Sava to secure all three points.
