Despite their respective league positions, Cork City narrowly defeated struggling Drogheda United this evening at United Park.

Cork, looking to bounce back from Monday's shock home defeat to Bohemians, started brightly as Conor Ellis struck the post. Drogheda nearly took a surprising lead when Thomas Byrne curled a shot narrowly wide from the edge of the box.

With the teams level at the break, Cork made the breakthrough early in the second-half as Stephen Dooley got in behind before slipping the ball through the legs of the onrushing Stephen McGuinness.

Cork had to withstand some late pressure but they almost sealed the win when Jimmy Keohane rattled the bar in stoppage time. Victory is another step towards an inevitable league title while Drogheda look set for an immediate return to the First Division.
