The Candystripes played The Tribesmen twice before this fixture and failed to win either occasion. However, Kenny Shiels set-up his team perfectly early in the match and his team broke down Galway United's three-man defence, which clearly wasn't working for Shane Keegan's men and Derry City took advantage twice as Ronan Curtis scored a superb free-kick after being brought down on the edge of the penalty area.

Nathan Boyle doubled Derry's lead just before the ten-minute mark and it looked like it would be a comfortable win for The Candystripes, but that wasn't the case. Galway United changed their formation and Derry City couldn't adapt to Galway's new strategy and The Foylersiders conceded after 25 minutes. The Tribesmen pulled one back through Gary Shanahan after Ronan Murray laid the ball off for the midfielder inside the penalty area and he beat Gerard Doherty with a scrappy effort.

In the second half, it was very nervy at times between the two teams and both had their chances. Vinny Flaherty headed the ball off the woodwork and should have equalised for Galway. In comparison, Ronan Curtis and Nathan Boyle also had their chances for Derry City, but couldn't convert. It didn't matter in the end as Derry City managed to see off Galway United in a very entertaining affair. The win also means The Candystripes now stretch their unbeaten run to 10 games and move into third, three points behind Dundalk. However, Shane Keegan and his men have work to do as they now sit in eleventh place with 14 points, three points behind Drogheda United in ninth.
