Derry City moved up to fifth in the Premier Division table with an impressive victory over Shelbourne.

Joe Thomson scored his first league goal for the club before Walter Figueira added a second after the break to secure the win.

Derry almost got off to the perfect start when Adam Hammill fired an effort against the bar just 15 seconds into the game.

The home side took the lead in the 20th minute. Poor defending from Shelbourne saw Joe Thomson collect the ball in the area and with plenty of time, he found the bottom corner.

Derry continued to dominate after the break as substitute Stephen Mallon almost found the net with Joe Malone's cross but failed to hit the target in the 59th minute. A minute later, Derry doubled their lead.

It was a fantastic run from Hammill who got to the byline and his low cross was knocked onto the post by a Shelbourne defender and the rebound was finished by Figueira.
