Cork City stretched their unbeaten run at the beginning of the SSE Airtricity League season to 16 games as they came from behind to defeat Shamrock Rovers at Turners Cross on Friday night.

Goals from Gearoid Morrissey, Johnny Dunleavy and a Ryan Delaney brace allowed the Leesiders to overturn Trevor Clarke’s incredible opener and maintain their 15 point lead over Dundalk.

Rovers took the lead after 16 minutes when Trevor Clarke’s surging run into the penalty area allowed to playmaker to drill a thunderous effort off the underside of the bar and into the net.

City levelled on the brink of half time when Greg Bolger’s excellent free was headed in off the bar from close range by Ryan Delaney. Gearoid Morrissey turned the game on its head shortly after David McAlliser was sent off for Rovers as he thumped into the top left corner from 25 yards.

And City made sure of the victory late on when Ryan Delaney and Johnny Dunleavy both added headers to the score.
