Cork City moved three points clear at the top of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division as they came from behind to defeat Munster Rivals Limerick 2-1 at Turners Cross on Saturday afternoon.

City had the chance to take the lead after just nine minutes as Killian Cantwell was adjudged to have pulled back Steven Beattie inside the penalty area.

With their usual penalty taker sitting on the bench, Karl Sheppard took over the responsibility from Kieran Sadlier but his low drive was well saved by Limerick’s Brendan Clarke. Limerick took the lead in the 34th minute as Danny Morrissey returned to haunt his former club as he hooked a clever effort in over the stranded Mark McNulty.

But the champions hit back just two minutes later as Graham Cummins headed home Colm Horgan’s brilliant cross at the near post. City were perhaps the better team in the second half and they grabbed what proved to be the winner with just twenty minutes remaining as Josh O’Hanlon headed in his first league goal for the club to earn Cork the crucial win.

City are now three points clear of Dundalk and Waterford in the race for the title whilst Limerick remain in the relegation places.
