Shamrock Rovers moved ten points clear at the top of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division as they comfortably defeated Cork City 3-1 at Turner’s Cross on Friday night.

After dominating the opening exchanges, Rovers deservedly took the lead in the 20th minute as Aaron Green turned the ball into Bolger’s path on the right and his cross to the near post was side-footed home by Sean Kavanagh.

Ronan Finn hit the bar with a brilliant effort moments before City thought they had levelled but Graham Cummins’ header was ruled out for offside. That moment proved important as Stephen Bradley’s side doubled their lead after 36 minutes when Aaron McEneff’s shot from distance deflected into the bottom left corner.

City pulled a goal back shortly before the half time break as Dan Casey nodded Roberto Lopes’ rushed clearance into the far corner from close range. But Rovers were never in danger and they made the game safe just past the hour mark as Aaron McEneff unleashed a stunning strike from 25 yards that gave Mark McNulty absolutely no chance.

The win sees Rovers record their first win on Leeside since June 2013 while for City, they are now in seventh following this fourth loss of the league season.
