Cork City have progressed to the final of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Senior Cup for a third season in a row as they squeezed past Limerick at Turners Cross on Friday evening.

Garry Buckley’s close range finish in the first half was enough to ensure the current FAI Cup final holders will have the chance to retain the Cup when they step out at the Aviva Stadium in November.

The game’s crucial strike came after just 15 minutes. Karl Sheppard’s clever lay off was expertly prodded to the back post by Kieran Sadlier, allowing Buckley to tuck the ball into the net from a few yards out.

Limerick more than played their part in a tight semi-final with Chiedozie Ogbene, Rodrigo Tosi and Shane Duggan all going close as the match wore on.

And the visitors thought they had snatched an equaliser late in proceedings but Bastien Hery’s header was just about scrambled off the line as City now await Dundalk or Shamrock Rovers in the final whilst keeping their hopes of a league and cup double alive.
