Cork City remain a point clear at the top of SSE Airtricity League Premier Division as they narrowly defeated Bohemians 1-0 at Turner’s Cross on Friday evening.

In what was a tame opening half, City almost took the lead in fortuitous circumstances as Derek Pender’s attempted clearance from a corner skipped off his head before striking the inside of the far post.

Bohemians threatened from a corner of their own moments later but Ian Morris’ clever header was hacked off the line at the far stick by the alert Barry McNamee.

The visitors continued to battle and they thought they had edged in front at the beginning of the second period as Dylan Watts slotted the ball past Mark McNulty but his joy was short-lived as he was flagged for offside.

The Champions continued to pile forward in search of the crucial winner and they duly snatched it in the final minute thanks to Gearoid Morrissey. Graham Cummins’ clever knockdown from Shane Griffin’s free-kick picked out Morrissey and the substitute hammered the ball into the roof of the net to send the 3,604 crowd wild.
