Cork City face an uphill battle if they are to reach the second round of the Champions League qualifiers as they were defeated 1-0 by Legia Warsaw in the first leg at Turner’s Cross on Tuesday evening.

The Irish double winners created numerous opportunities during a spirited performance with the best of the chances on the night falling to Barry McNamee and Graham Cummins.

McNamee ought to have found the net after 13 minutes but he couldn’t get a clean strike towards goal when through one on one with the keeper. And Cummins followed suit in the second period but shortly after being introduced, he poked his tame shot at a relieved Warsaw keeper Arkadiusz Malarz.

The Polish double winners were restricted to efforts from distance with the talented Sebastian Szymanski going close on a number of occasions. And it was from such an attempt that Legia eventually found the net from with Michal Kucharczyk grabbing what proved to be the winner with 12 minutes remaining.

The Poland international stepped onto Krzysztof Maczynski’s short free and drilled the ball just inside the far left post from all of thirty yards to break City hearts.
