Cobh Ramblers moved top of the SSE Airtricity First Division with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Athlone Town on Saturday afternoon.

The match began at a fast pace on the ever improving surface at St. Colman's Park.

Ramblers did much of the pressing in the opening quarter striking the bar from a corner and pinning the Athlone defence back consistently.

Their reward came in the 29th minute when Ross Mann was fouled by Athlone keeper Igor Labuts allowing captain Chris McCarthy to drill home his second goal of the season.

His third was to follow just two minutes later, again from the penalty spot, when Scott McCarthy was uphended in the box.

The second half followed much the same as the first with Athlone struggling to cope with Ramblers hard working midfield.

Ramblers continued to press and when Ross Mann played a terrific through ball to Stephen Christopher, he slotted confidently into the far corner and the result was beyond doubt.

Further goals were to follow from debutant Cian Coleman and another for Stephen Christopher rounded off a wonderful afternoon for the East Cork side.

Ethan Keogh added a late consolation for Athlone but the result was never in doubt. Next league game for Cobh Ramblers is a journey to Cabinteely whereas Athlone welcome Shelbourne.
