Cobh Ramblers got their first points of the season after edging a five-goal thriller at St Colman’s Park.
Bryan Murphy gave the hosts the lead in the 21st minute after applying the finish from a David Hurley corner. They were two ahead five minutes later, this time Dave Hurley firing low into the bottom the corner.
But Athlone fought back and were awarded two penalties. The first was given on the half-hour mark for handball and Darren Meenan dispatched the spot kick. Then before the interval the visitors were given a second penalty and Meenan made no mistake to draw the sides level.
In challenging conditions The Rams were forced to swap their kit at half time and played the second 45 minutes in their away kit.
In the 67th minute Cobh’s night seemed to go from bad to worse when Dylan Walsh received a straight red for a foul.
But despite having 10 men it was Stuart Ashton’s side who claimed the win when Ian Turner found the corner with a fine finish in the 82nd minute.
Result: Cobh Ramblers 3-2 Athlone Town – (Murphy 21’, Hurley 26’, Turner 82’. Darren Meenan 30’, 44’)
