Drogheda United moved to within three points of the top of the table with an emphatic 4-1 victory of Cobh Ramblers on Saturday evening at St. Colman’s Park.
The match exploded into life with both teams deciding on all out attack from the off. The breakthrough didn’t take long to come when Mark Doyle opened the scoring for the visitors in only the 4th minute.
The winger was quickest to react to a diagonal through ball and he calmly dinked it over the on-rushing Mylod. With barely a chance for Drogheda to catch their breath, Cobh Ramblers found their equaliser within a minute when a surging run and cross by Fernandes was tapped home at the back post by Stephen Kenny.
It was a wide-open game with both defences looking shaky under pressure. It was Drogheda who took advantage of this in the 17th minute when Doyle nipped in to claim his second of the night.
A free kick towards the box posed no real threat but Cobh defender James McSweeney left the ball run past him expecting keeper Mylod to come and claim. Doyle to his credit read the situation and got in between both players to poke home.
It was an uncharacteristic mistake from the much-improved Ramblers defence of late. The home side enjoyed most of the possession for the rest of the half but failed to create anything clear cut.
Shane O’ Connor came close, but his shot was well blocked after some good work by Ian Turner. The next goal was always going to be crucial and it was Drogheda who got it in the 56th minute as a Kavanagh free kick was slotted home by Stephen Meaney.
Things were to get worse for Ramblers less than ten minutes later when McNally headed home unchallenged from a corner. Drogheda were now in full flow and should have extended their lead even further, but Doyle and Lyons were guilty of missing glorious chances.
Both teams made changes in the final twenty minutes which interrupted the flow of the game. Regardless, Drogheda saw the final stages out with ease to claim an impressive win away from home.
