Galway United kept their promotion hopes alive with a 2-1 victory over Cobh Ramblers on Saturday evening.

The opening stages of the match were very even with Galway’s physicality giving them the slight edge over the home side. However, it was Ramblers who almost took the lead in the 11th minute when Galway keeper Tadhg Ryan spilled a cross allowing Fernandes to get a shot at goal.

Ryan managed to recover and get a block in to deny the Cobh midfielder. The game turned in a two-minute spell when the visitors found the net twice in quick succession. First, a ball into the box found its way to Williams at the back post whose shot was saved by Hunt but Barry was there to tap home.

Less than 90 seconds later, goalscorer Barry slid a delightful ball through to McCormack who breezed past McSweeney before coolly slotting it into the corner.

Ramblers struggled to get back into the half and it was Galway who looked more likely to extend their lead.

Ramblers emerged in the second half with a sense of urgency and created early chances through Kenny and half-time substitute Mylod. The home side continued to press and were rewarded in the 80th minute when former Galway player Kenny smashed home from 10 yards after a low cross from Christopher.

Galway had to endure a few nervy moments in the closing stages but held out for the win.
