Cobh Ramblers secured their first home win of the season with an impressive display over Cabinteely on Saturday evening.
Ramblers were the first out of the blocks and went ahead in only the 2nd minute when a ball over the top allowed Leonard to beat the offside trap and lob McGuinness from 20 yards out. It was a very composed finish from the young Cobh striker and the perfect start for the home side.
To their credit, Cabinteely looked to respond immediately but they failed to turn their period of dominance into any real openings.
Watson had a half volley attempt in the 14th minute but it was well wide of Hunt’s goal. Leonard was proving a handful for the Cabinteely defence and he almost doubled the home sides lead in the 21st minute when he turned the defender but his strike was inches wide.
Ramblers continued to look the more likely to score as the half wore on and almost found the second in the 30th minute when a lovely passage of play involving McAlavey and Leonard saw a Murphy strike blocked on the line by Knight.
The second half saw Cabinteely start the stronger and enjoy a lot of possession. Watson missed a good chance with a header from a Casey free kick and other chances for Knight and Casey were spurned.
In the 60th minute, McAlavey created a shooting opportunity after a clever back heel allowed Hurley to curl an effort at goal but McGuinness was equal to it.
In a tense final ten minutes, Cabinteely threw everything at the Ramblers defence but they couldn’t find a way through.
