Cobh Ramblers’ title push ended in disappointing fashion on Saturday evening as a hugely impressive Cabinteely recorded a 3-0 victory.
On a wet surface at St. Colman’s Park both teams began rather cautiously. Ramblers had the better of the early exchanges with both Leonard and Murphy creating opportunities.
As the half progressed, Cabinteely grew in confidence and Dean Casey missed a great chance to give his side the lead after being put through one on one with Hunt. The Cobh keeper did well to save the shot with his foot.
In the 31st minute, Cabinteely had a goal disallowed. After some neat build up play involving Earley and Waters, Watson hammered home from ten yards but he was marginally offside.
Moments later, Cabinteely did lead when a quick throw by Byrne was smashed home by Doyle. Ramblers looked for a response before the break but the closest they came was a Leonard free kick that was deflected wide.
It was Cabinteely who came out the stronger in the second half and soon doubled their lead when a slip by Ramblers defender Taylor allowed Doyle to pounce on the mistake and rifle home for his second of the game.
From there, Cabinteely continued to dominate as Ramblers saw their title challenge slip away. The defeat was confirmed in the 85th minute when Casey volleyed home after a terrific cross from Earley. The result means Waterford are confirmed as this season’s First Division champions.
