Drogheda United secured their place in this year’s play-offs with a 2-0 victory over Cobh Ramblers on Saturday evening at St. Colman’s Park.
The visitors got off to a dream start when Doyle was pulled down in the box by Ramblers defender Kevin Taylor in the opening minute of the game. It was a clear tug on the jersey and the referee had no hesitation pointing to the spot. Sean Brennan stood up and confidently sent Hunt the wrong way to give Drogheda the lead.
Drogheda continued to look lively with Doyle at the centre of all good play in the opening ten minutes, but they couldn’t find that second goal.
Ramblers slowly grew into the game and almost equalised in the 19th minute when great work by Kenny allowed him to dink a ball to the back post where Chris Hull connected with a header. The ball beat Drogs’ keeper Skinner but they had a defender back on the line to clear.
Both teams had periods of dominance after this but failed to create any clear cut chances for the rest of the half.
The second half began in similar fashion as the first as Drogheda came racing out of the blocks. An early corner was played in by Purdy and defender Gallagher powered a header home after making a fantastic run towards the near post. He almost repeated the trick 10 minutes later however this time his header went narrowly wide.
The tempo of the match unsurprisingly dropped in the final half hour. Chris Hull had a great chance to reduce the deficit in the 75th minute after being played clean through by Kenny. With only Skinner to beat, the Cobh striker sliced badly wide.
Drogheda saw out the final 15 minutes with relative ease and secured their place in the play-offs against Shelbourne.
