Cabinteely created a bit of history at Stradbrook on Friday night as they consolidated their hold on fourth place in the table.
Marty Waters contributed a hat-trick, as they beat Athlone 6-2. Waters scored the first of his goals in the 9th minute, as he smashed home a half-volley from ten yards. Athlone had failed to deal with Stephen Ball's initial free-kick.
The visitors were playing a high line, and Cabinteely were beginning to find the gaps. Waters's second saw him getting on the end of a through ball, before finishing passed Gleeson into the right corner.
With 26 minutes on the clock, the hosts were 2-0 ahead. The third came just four minutes later, and it was very similar to the second. A ball through the middle found its way to Waters, but this time Gleeson, in goals, and Ian Fletcher got in to prevent Waters's hat-trick.
But Joe Doyle was on hand to collect the ball, and round the keeper, who was still on the ground, and finish into the empty net. With an hour left to play, the contest looked over. Athlone held on until half-time, but ten minutes into the second period, Cabo moved four clear.
This was the hat-trick for Waters, after he got on the end of a free-kick and finished smartly passed Gleeson once more. It emphasises the strength of the Cabo squad that's finishing the season, that Ryan Swan could be brought on.
The former UCD striker had Cabo's fifth in the 77th minute, as he poked the ball home from close range, after a cross from the left. It was six four minutes later. Cabinteely players were queueing up to finish a ball in from the left, and it was Doyle, with his second, who made the vital contact.
A late Stephen Walsh penalty, after Ethan Nkololo was fouled, followed up by a fine back post finish by Claudio Silva, were mere consolation for Athlone, but the result was all about Cabinteely. A record winning margin for them in the League, and they finish the night in fourth spot.
