Galway United had the quality of their finishing to thank as they claimed an important three points at Stradbrook against Cabinteely.
First-half goals from Robbie Williams and Marc Ludden sealed the points for the away side despite a late Keith Dalton game.
Shane Keegan's side were dominated by Cabinteely for much of the match but had the chances in the opening stages and were rewarded eight minutes in. Experienced defender Robbie Williams found the corner of the net after Cabo failed to clear a Ryan Connolly free-kick to give Galway the lead.
Pat Devlin's dominated from that point onwards but couldn't get the ball in the back of the net despite a number of opportunities for Joe Doyle and Conor Early. One of the best chances of the first-half saw Luke Clucas break forward and despite better options left and right, Clucas' effort was well saved when a pass through to Doyle was the better option.
Cabo continued to pressurise the Galway defence but were dealt a hammer-blow six minutes before the break. Eoin McCormack delivered a cross to the back-post for Gary Shanahan to nod back into the path of Ludden who tapped home.
Unfair on Devlin's side who brought on Kieran 'Marty' Waters during the second-half but still struggled to find the crucial break-through. The goal they deserved eventually did come in the final minute of normal time in bizarre circumstances.
Tadhg Ryan was adjudged to have picked up a back-pass, the second time in the game, and Cabinteely reacted quickly for substitute Keith Dalton to score.
The points could have been shared but Earley fired wide in the final minute of added time to see Galway United go level on points with second-placed Drogheda United.
