Athlone Town built on their impressive win over Dundalk in the Leinster Cup earlier in the week to claim their first league win on the pitch since the May 5, 2017.
It was Wexford who got this high scoring encounter going first. Within the first five minutes, Danny Furlong picked up possession and had Nugent running outside him on the right.
A perfect through ball to the runner and Nugent finished well low past Myles after a lovely first touch. Moments later a moment of madness. Grogan slipped on the ball and Furlong was there to pounce but Grogan managed to recover and clear the ball.
Both players had words with each other and Furlong appeared to stamp on the back of Grogan's heel as they walked away. It wasn't long then before Athlone drew level. Kaleem Simon is given far too much room on the right wing and cuts inside to the area, lays it off to Meenan who passes the ball out left again to Casey who fires a first time shot low past the keeper Walsh.
The start of the second half was as manic as the first half, with Athlone taking the lead. Meenan played a delightful through ball into Williams who split two defenders and his deft touch is enough to put the ball past Walshe.
But Athlone threw away their own lead. Doyle was tripped in the area, and Doherty stepped up to hammer his side back level. That looked like it could be it as Athlone struggled to find another breakthrough, but it would come at a corner.
It was headed down into the six yard box and Kaleem Simon managed to do an overhead kick and put Athlone ahead again. The home side would go on to double their lead after Williams chased down a lost cause.
He pulled the ball back to the edge of the area and Dillon fired into an empty net. Terry Butler will be happy for giving his side their first league win in over 18 months. however its back to the drawing board for Brian O'Sullivan.
