Scullion appeared to kick out on Lanigan in front of the Athlone Town bench. The referee had no qualms about reaching for a red, and there wasn't much protest from the Athlone Town management.
In the second half Shelbourne took control with two goals from Evans sandwiched between a strike from Prendergast.
Shelbourne go back to Dublin with their first win of the season, while Athlone will be wondering where their mojo has gone from the opening two wins of the season.
