Athlone opened the scoring with a quick breakaway goal by Jason Lyons. New signing Liam McCartan set it up for the big striker after a dazzling run from the half way line saw his pass through the legs of the last man. Lyons went on to round Cabinteely goalkeeper Mick Kelly and put the ball in the back of the net.
Cabinteely came out strong in the second half and deserved their equaliser. A low ball into the area wasn't dealt with and Joe Doyle was free at the back post as he slotted the ball into the corner.
It ended with the points being shared.
