Wexford FC have secured their third victory of the season after a 1-0 away victory over Athlone Town.
After a fairly pedestrian start, the game burst into life in the 7th minute when the ball fell to the feet of Wexford striker Danny Doyle just inside the box, who produced a quick turn and a powerful shot which was smartly tipped over the bar by Darcy Lawless.
In the 15th minute Wexford’s Dean George got on possession just inside his own half, before producing a mazing solo run in which he beat three opposition defenders before crossing the ball into Aaron Dobbs, who could not direct his volley on target.
Athlone began to grow into the game as the half-hour mark approached, although without showing much attaching intent. The visitors would open the scoring in the 32nd minute.
A John Morgan shot from a free-kick from just outside the area looked to be tame enough, however it bounced off the hard surface just in front of Lawless and skipped over the Athlone ‘keeper’s outstretched arm.
They came close to doubling their lead at the start of the second period after Lawless misread a long ball, with striker Danny Doyle playing the ball back to George who’s shot from 50 yards went just wide of the empty net.
The second half was one of very few opportunities, with Athlone beginning to dominate possession as the half went on. Wexford did look threatening on the counter-attack, and almost got in behind the home defence on a few occasions. However they were unable to add their add to their lead, with Morgan’s strike proving the difference between the sides.
